My first encounter with Carri McMullan was without a doubt, unforgettable. She was competing in a local talent competition in Louisville, Kentucky. The vivacious red head exuded bona fide diva presence and confidence
the midst of a pool of competitors that were somewhat younger and a bit more representative of the typical image and persona that most talent competitions are looking for. She informed the audition panel members that she'd be singing the Mary J. Blidge tune, "I'm Going Down". What was really going down that day, was all my preconceptions of what kind of vocals should be coming out of what kind of lungs. To be honest, the distinctive Kentucky accent she spoke with did not set me up for the powerfully soulful intonations that she proceeded to blow us all away with.
Carri's powerful voice can justifiably be compared to Chaka Khan, Mary J. Blige & Patti LaBelle as she takes on big, belted out R&B ballads with ease. But she is equally at ease and adept at others genres including country and jazz. She began developing her vocal prowess as early as three, with her Southern Gospel Church roots. She is a Kentucky Music Educators Association All-State Chorus alumnus, and has captured several vocal awards including a Kentucky State Fair Karaoke win and a "Louisville Idol" title in 2003. When asked how she categorizes her style, she relates that she doesn't really fit the commercially marketed image of an R&B or pop singer. "Let''s face it, I'm a big white woman that sings black music, That's pretty hard to sell." But she's remains determined to give 100 uncompromising percent to her craft and performances, so that her talent speaks for itself.
